Gold Star Awards: November, 2011

Yep. A day late.  And I was doing so good, too. What can I say. Worst work-week I've had in TEN YEARS.

The year is 1969, and it saw two indictees from the BWAA andf two from the Veteran's Committee.

The Stan Musial Gold Star #41: The Representative Press and his YouTube Channel.

His YouTube Channel has an almost obssessive focus on issues relating to Israel but is, at it's heart, remains a Media Criticism channel, focusing on the failures on the mainstream media to tell the REAL story about such things as the motivation behind the 9/11 attacks (hint: It was our support of Israel) and the Police enforced media black out when the Occupy movement was evicted in New York. Ths guy has the the REAL SCOOP on what the Mainstream Media isn't telling you.

(Maybe William will look into  some of these items and then try to explain where that systematic Mainstream Liberal Media Bias comes in.)

The Roy Campanella Gold Star #42: What The Heck Has Obama Done So Far?

OK, I certainly hope that I don't now need to re-establish any of my cred as a CRITIC of the President, BUT... the next time some Right Wing Jackoff Rick Perry type comes talking smack about how "nothing's gotten done," send him to THIS site. Stuff's happened. Progress has been made. That may not make up for the missed opportunities and the progress that hasn't but that doesn't mean that the useless half of this country should be able to run there yaps scott-free without a rebuke.  Good resource.

The Stan Coveleski Silver Star #39: Modest  Medusa

This cute little web comic started out as little more than a guilty pleasure for me, but I'm always happy to recognize an artist that's willing to lend their talents to a good cause... so go buy this T-Shirt!:
And, in any case, it's a fun little take on mythology, monsters, family, friends, fitting in and sticking it to authority.  And, as I always recommend, read it from the beginning!

The Waite Hoyt Silver Star #40: The Bad Chemicals

For biting social, political and philisophical satire, I've only found one Comic that can hold it's own against Saturday Mornign Breakfast Cereal.  And THIS IS IT. Rather than say anythign more, just let me share a few gems:

and BEST of all...

OK, so more than just a few, but serioulsy... GOLD, right?  So check it out. They're mostly topical and always hilarious.

  1. Your "BEST of all" comic doesn't make sense. The "hope for change" that the guy wants to promise is amazingly like what President Obama said. However, he had to pay off corporations and unions and promise the American public a monetary pay-out if they elected him. How is acting like a right-winger to get elected giving people "hope for change they can believe in"?

And you're right, progress has been made by President Obama's tenure. He finally got the unemployment down to 8.6% ... by making finding a job so hard that 300+,000 just quit looking for work and that removed them from the list of those counted as unemployed. Good job Obama, you got the unemployment almost to your campaign promised levels. You've done so much for this country, everyone hopes for more change we can believe in.

  2. Your first paragraph proves what we already know: That Conservatives don't understand irony. (IOW: Every Liberal reader will appreciate that because they KNOW Obama's been a pussy when dealing with the Rigth, and at some point you might get it through your thick skull that Liberals / Progressives / etc... DO NOT in fact 'worship' (or at this point even CARE FOR) Obama. Hero Worship is something YOU LOT do. Don't project your personality flaws onto us. (Here's a clue: It IS a criticism of Obama, doofus. And that's why we LIKE it!)

Your second shows that you have not, in fact, done your research. The number of jobs has grown significanlty under Obama - increasing pretty much every month since about March of '08. That's a FACT and you can look it up. (Try the Department of Labor, for example.) And one of the reasons that unemplopyment remains as HIGH as it is that, in fact, MORE people are now looking, who previously hadn't been. The OTHER reason is that it was simply THAT BIG a hole we needed to climb out of: COMPLIMENTS OF GEORGE W. BUSH.

  3. Another reason, Eddie, is that many of the private sector jobs that have been created under Obama have been offset by losses of jobs in the public sector, due to ill-advised cuts in spending.
Good opinion piece by Katrina vanden Huevel in today's WaPo, demonstrating what you've said about liberals and progressives and our attitudes toward Obama, which William still insists (at least with regard to me) in calling "unconditional support."

  4. That big hole wasn't compliments of ONLY Bush. Clinton had his hand in creating that housing bubble that led to the economic collapse that you and almost every other liberal blame solely on Bush. Bush actually had an OK record (concerning unemployment), but the rules that Clinton instituted forcing banks to give home loans to people who couldn't afford them finally caught up to everyone. That's a FACT and you can look that up, too.

  5. "but the rules that Clinton instituted forcing banks to give home loans to people who couldn't afford them finally caught up to everyone. That's a FACT and you can look that up, too."

Actually, that isn't a "fact" (nor a "FACT"), and you, in fact, won't find any support for that in the real world, outside of the right's insane echo-chamber. In the real world, 80% of subprime loans were made by institutions that were either entirely unregulated by the Community Reinvestment Act (the law in question), or were only partially regulated by it--more than half were from those entirely unregulated ones, who then bundled them up and resold them at a rate twice as high as the CRA-regulated institutions.

Clinton screwed up and helped give birth to the crisis by deregulating these institutions in the '90s.

  6. William - Classic has saved me the trouble of educating you. Thanks for the assist, Class. It's good to have you back!

(At some point he'll get it though his head that just because a Democrat does something, that doesn't make it Liberal.)

  7. "Clinton screwed up and HELPED GIVE BIRTH TO THE CRISIS by deregulating these institutions in the '90s." (highlites mine)

Which is my implication by my statement that Bush wasn't the ONLY one at fault. That IS what I said, isn't it Eddie? That Bush wasn't the ONLY one at fault? So, now, what part did classicliberal2 save you the trouble of educating me with? It sure sounds like he ADMITTED I was correct in my assessment of the situation.

  8. While I'm being schooled, can anyone tell me what part of the 90's Bush Jr was in control of the American economy during? Maybe you're all talking about Bush Sr? He was in control of our economy for part of the 90's. Did he start the collapse of the housing bubble?

No, half-wit. Your claim was that the crisis was brought about by "the rules that Clinton instituted forcing banks to give home loans to people who couldn't afford them." That was NOT the case. Those bad loans were made by institutions that weren't regulated by the CRA, the same institutions that bundled them up and sold them off. Clinton's contributions was that he deregulated these institutions, not that he overregulated to the point of forcing them to make bad loans.

  10. The CRA mandated that banks (who received FDIC) be overseen by the government to insure they give bonus treatment to lesser qualified applicants within the communities they do business in. You DO realize this stuff is easy to look up, right? Perhaps you could look up the meaning of the word "mandate" while you're at it.

Other banks may have done that as well, but the CRA forced some banks to do it.

  11. Thus ends the conversation with a liberal. Bring facts to the table and poof ... they're gone.

    School must be out, huh?
