...And you'll find as much of the smae stupidity as you find on the Right.
(Of course, to be fair, on the Right you don't have to go nearly as far!)
Let me back up a bit...
I don't care for labels. I'm not a "Republican," but that doesn't make me a "Democrat." Thanks to all of the political and mental baggage that comes with the label, I haven't called myself "Conservative" in about 20 years or so. Does that make me "Liberal?" Meh, I suppose. That's fine, if that's how those numb-skulls want to characterize me, I'm OK with that. I can't stop them, and I hardly see it as an insulting epithet anyway. But I just don't embrace labels. (Which alone, in their eyes, MAKES me a Liberal!) But I don't really care if my position on something is Liberal or Conservative. That it happens to be liberal 90-some percent of the time is entirely a function of modern Liberals largely choosing the path of reason, rather that me choosing the path of modern Liberalism. I like "Progressive" better anyway, since it conjures imagery more about forwards versus backwards than Right versus Left, but again: I really don't care if I earn that label or not. I only endeavour to form opinions that I believe are principled and defensible and that will lead to positions that make the world a better place. If, years from, now it's happens to be so-called "Conservatives" who do that? Fine. Then I'll be "Conservative" again.
I guess my point is that I just hate DOGMA (the philosophical concept not the Kevin Smith movie!) and DOGMATIC thinking. And really that precludes me from being Conservative these days, because ever since they decided to basically abandon Social Libertarianism and embrace Christian Funny-Mentalism, dogmatic thinking has become a basic requirement to being Conservative. And while [whatever you call the alternative: Liberalism, Progressivism, etc...] simply does not embrace dogma the same way - Liberalism is all about CHANGE, after all - the fact is that if you go far enough off the deep-end (and we do have one) you'll find that there IS in fact dogma, or at least dogmatic thinking in "our camp" as well.
The first time I encountered this was in seeing the hard-core Feminist reaction to basic rape-prevention advice, characterizing any and all discussions of that nature as "blaming the victim." And DON'T GET ME WRONG: There is NEVER any justification for rape, and I ABSOLUTELY BELIEVE we have a societal commitment to stopping all forms of Rape, Violence against Women, Sexual Harassment, and any other form of mysoginy and gender discrimination. Hey: I manage to get through every single one of my days, working with women, without triggering a lawsuit; so I have very little sympathy for those man who can't seem to accomplish this. (And I've worked with some of them as well. Dumbasses, every one.) I despise the Barbie doll on many levels, and truly believe that the sexiest part of a woman's body is between her ears. So I've got plenty of feminist cred. Yet, when it's pointed out that maybe after her fourth abusive relationship, a girl might want to take batter care in selecting her life-partner? (Or address whatever personal issues she's got that keeps her fgoing down the same path over and over?) I get attacked for "blaming the victim." Hey: Society can do anything and everything you want them to, and yet in the end you can still only control your own actions.
When idealism blinds you to pragmatism?
That's dogmatic thinking.
The other day on MMFA, I was in an argument with a LIBERAL who wanted to defund NPR, because their bias was even more insidious than Fox's, since they put on juts a good enough of show that people believe them to be objective. OMFG, where to even begin? NPR is worse for society than Fox? *shakes head* Is NPR perfect? No. They absolutely are not perfect. They have biases and agendas and rely on political favor from congress as well as corporate donors for their financial survival. So yes, they have committed every error from false equivalency and balance to broadcasting outright RW misinformation. The thing is? That is largely the EXCEPTION at NPR, where it is the RULE at Fox. If you seriously conclude that NPR is WORSE than Fox? Well... You're either off the deep end of Conservatism, or off the deep end of Liberalism, as was the case here. (Though, for the record, I do agree with them that there was simply no reason for NPR to act as they did in this case. However, much like with MSNBC's treatment of Olbermann in 2008, I will take a media station that at least HAS a standard of ethics over one that flaunts their lack of one ANY DAY.)
So... what's this all about. Well... I'm talking to my Dad earlier today (staunch Conservative / Republican) and he asked me if I'd heard about this idiot superintendent in Massachusetts who wants to ban Halloween, Columbus Day and Thanksgiving. Now, I had, on MMFA. But in a stunning (LOL) show of liberal bias, they point out of she may have had plenty of Conservative allies (Christian Whack-Jobs, Pat Robertson, etc...), had she just stuck to Halloween. But they kind of left out the rest of it. But that's fine, I've got the whole story now. And you know what?
She's a fucking idiot.
Now DON'T GET ME WRONG: My objection to this particular breed of LW insanity has nothing to do with the "PC Police" complaints coming from the Right. Unlike the modern breed of jingoistic, Right Wing, "American Execptionalists" I have no problem discussing the genocide of the Native Americans (and it WAS a genocide) nor of the Europeans bringing diseases, nor of them stealing their land, nor of having a frank discussion about those very "exceptional" origins of America from all angles. And it is precisely because I believe those discussion to be of such importance that I make my judgement of her.
What better time to have a complete discussion, and endeavour to give children a FULL and COMPLETE understanding of our history than in the context of these Holidays?! And seriously... It's not like Thanksgiving is all about celebrating the Pilgrims (eventual) victory (massacre, genocide) of the Indians, and neither is it really about trying to GLOSS OVER IT either. Not anymore, anyway. For as long as I can remember, it's been little more than a Hallmark Holiday and an excuse to drink and est yourself into a carb-coma. Maybe, maybe we'd take a few minutes to "give thanks" for the "things were thankful for." (Hardly an offensive practice.) But really? It's about Turkey and Potatoes and Stuffing and Gravy and possibly some form of Alcohol. So if this person wants to raise awareness about what REALLY happened to the Native Americans, maybe a more productive way would be to fill the void of meaning that this holiday has now, let the kids have their celebration, and USE THE OPPORTUNITY to EDUCATE them a little! (They still do that in schools, right?)
She'd reach a lot more people that way, raise awareness about the American Genocide that much higher, and piss off... basically no one! (I'm not even sure that ACTUAL Native Americans would give a crap about this, one way or the other!) And so thinking that we should BAN Thanksgiving and Columbus Day (not to mention Halloween?) is just stupid. And, if it's coming from a Liberal motivation, only the result of what happens when LIBERALS start engaging in DOGMATIC THINKING of their own.
Nothing will accomplish more in getting modern Americans to FORGET about the fate that befell the Native Americans than BANNING Thanksgiving Celebrations. On their best day FOX NEWS could only dream of accomplishing so much harm.

I Don't Believe in Miracles
Nobel Laureate and one of a very few people who “get it” (or tell the truth) anymore, Paul Krugman, wrote an excellent piece the other day in the NYT debunking the myth of the “Texas Miracle” that has supposedly happened under Governor Rick / General Robert E. Perry. It’s great piece and although it doesn’t go far enough (to use one of his own famous critiques) I recommend that everyone read it, just I as Recommend reading pretty much ANYTHNG this man writes. (Barry? Are you listening?)
And last night the Gym some ass-hat two machines down from me not only had Fox News On, but had it turned UP. (Usually the TV's are muted and just show subtitles.) So I got to listen to a marvelously fact-free response from the four members of the Fox Panel who HAVE NOT won Nobel Prizes in Economics. Devoid of rational response, or evidence to support their so called “miracle,” they report to calling [Krugman's analysis] the “Alien Invasion” theory suggesting either that Krugman credits illegal immigration ALONE for ALL of Texas’ growth, or that he was suggesting that little green men, perhaps from Mars, were somehow to thank. And of course, the average Fox viewer is more likely to hear that explanation and think, “Wow, that Krugman sure is a nut!” rather than, “Wow, these Fox peoples sure are stupid!” Because remember:
A LIBERAL WILL TELL YOU WHY YOUR ARGUMENT IS WRONG.
A CONSERVATIVE WILL TELL YOU WHY YOUR ARGUMENT IS LIBERAL.
(As an aside, between how pissed off I was getting listening to Fox and the Trainer playing the Greatest Hits of the Rocky movies with one his clients, I did have a really good workout!)
(Another aside - I couldn't find a transcript of the Fox segment, but while looking for one, I found almost the next best thing: This Idiot's Blog. Check it out, although preferably not right after you've eaten! We got a future Hall of Shamer here, for sure.I'm curious to see if he has the balls to let my comments post(he did! good on him!), and the chops to respond to them. Or come here! If he does, who knows? It might get interesting.)
Well, anyway, I’m all for debunking “Miracles” as anyone who understands my Humanist and Skeptical Philosophy already knows. And I heard an EXCELLENT story on NPR this morning that started where Krugman left off and ran with it, showing even more reasons why the “Texas Miracle” is unlikely to apply to the broader economy. You can find a transcript and audio HERE, but here are some of the highlights:
1) Population Growth: Texas has had an influx of immigrants, both legal and illegal, yes, but also many people moving there from other States. And, as Mister Krugman pointed out, it’s not like EVERY STATE’S population can grow based on people moving there from OTHER STATES. So, either it IS (or will have to be) an actual “Alien Invasion,” as Fox sarcastically put it, or it won’t work. Nice work there, Fox.
2) Public Sector growth has been every bit as robust as Private Sector growth. Liberals would be neither surprised nor bothered by this, but remember: He’s promising small Government. Apparently what’s been good for Texas will NOT in fact be good for the rest of the Country – at least according to him and his Tea-Backers.
3) The overwhelming majority of the private sector jobs have paid minimum-wage or less. Governor Perry, please, despite what your Tea-Backer and Supply-Side buddies will tell you, we don’t just want jobs. We want GOOD PAYING JOBS. Filling the economy with part-time, minimum wage jobs (or worse) is NOT what we’re looking for!
4) Despite all that Public Sector Growth – that the Right isn’t even prescribing? Texas ranks 49th in per pupil public school spending, and 50th – tied with Mississ-fucking-ssippi (or as my father-in-law calls it: The states that keep West Virginia from being LAST in anything) in the percentage of adults that go without health insurance.
5) Texas residence still go without many of the services that residents of every other state enjoy. Remember folks, because this is his recipe for success: Sub-Minimum Wage Jobs, and no Public Services. THAT’s the Texas “Miracle.”
6) Perry's “Enterprise Fund,” which gives taxpayer money to companies to come to, or expand in, Texas. *ugh* OK, putting aside that this is little more than Rick Perry giving tax-payer money to the company’s that back his campaign (alone enough to warrant his removal from office) this might sound a bit familiar. In one of the rare instance in which I agree with the tea-baggers, another word for this is… duh-dah-daaaaaah: STIMULUS. (You know: That thing they want to GET RID OF so we can have MORE JOBS?) (Idiots.) And in one of those rare instances that I agree with Rick Perry, depending on how this is administered this can be a good thing. Of course, I’d prefer public works projects to strait corporate giveaways, but, in a rare instance where Paul Krugman and Rick Perry would agree, the economic effect is largely the same: IT CREATES JOBS. But, of course, this will likely be off the table when it comes to the rest of the country. The Tea Party Republican Retards have no intention of spending any money to fix anything. (At least, not while Obama's in office.)
And finally, the one that PISSES ME OFF THE MOST…
7) What kind of companies thrive in Texas? What are the biggest employers there, the ones driving most of that jobs growth? Well…Enron, ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Marathon Oil, Shell Oil, Texaco… You see the pattern yet? Mostly Oil Companies and other Energy Companies. And those guys have been doing great while the rest of the country’s economy remains in the shitter. Why? BOWEL-BASHINGLY HIGH GAS PRICES, THAT’S HOW!!!! These companies have made it their business model to siphon off as much of the rest of country's growth as possible! Well… OK… I’ll say potential growth, because with these greedy little fuckwads operating the way they do, they rest of the country will basically NEVER GROW AGAIN. Does that sound alarmist? Think about it. Since ~2005 or thereabouts (I've noticed it pretty clearly since the days after Hurricane Katrina) the pattern has gone in lockstep perfection:
1: Gas prices go up =>the economy slows.
2: Slow economy => no jobs => less demand => gas prices drop.
3: Low gas prices mean people have more money, as they are no longer being strangled by the oil companies. (Thank you, Mister Keyenes!)
4: More money => more demand => economy starts to improve.
5: Economy improves, demand goes up => GAS PRICES GO UP.
6: GOTO 1
And it doesn’t make a difference whether the oil is foreign or not. (Shell is a Dutch company. They still employ a lot of Texan-Americans.) The problem is that oil and gas (energy) prices will ALWAYS act as drag on the economy. They will ALWAYS be a negatively correlated indicator. Until we break their stranglehold we will not be able to escape this pattern. It’s like a tax on the rest of the economy, but one who’s rate actually goes up to the point that it kills growth as soon as there IS any. And nowhere has this kick-in-the-balls been more evident than in my home state of Michigan. High gas prices killed the SUV. That’s great for the environment, don’t get me wrong. It needed to happen, and it was inevitable that big-Auto would need to transition off of them. But the gas prices have gone back down since then! They slowed the economy and were really what kicked off the mortgage crisis. (Not the kindling, of course, just the spark.) And the two brought the Big Three automakers to the brink of bankruptcy. And we haven’t had a robust recovery – because the Republicans and big oil won’t LTE US!
Nice going.
Oh yeah… and as for the whole Low-Tax, low Regulation business environment?
8) Texas job growth has not kept pace with its population growth: They have higher unemployment that the high-tax, highly regulated, robust public service providing states of New York and Massachusetts. (You remember Massachusetts, right? The state with near-universal health care coverage, compared to Texas’ rank of dead last?)
So THAT’S his recipe folks:
• Shitty, Low paying jobs
• No public services
• Little to no health insurance
• Underfunded schools
• High gas prices
You know what? If THAT shit works? I just might start believing in “miracles!”

Forget Fascists... we're actually Nazi's now
Provocative title, I know.
I had to take a break for a few days. I heard a story on NPR Frito be day morning that was profoundly disturbing. And my anger It came through in my posts to MMFA on Friday, it came through in my work / in the office, and even my wife noticed it when I got home. So I had to take a breather. And you know what? A few days later, and I don't feel any less repulsed by it.
As if the Citizens United decision wasn't bad enough, NPR did a story about ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council. To put it gently, it's a non-profit that hooks up corporate shills and legislators for the purpose of getting really awful legislation passed, and obfuscating where it comes from, and just who's buying the legislator in question. And because it's a non-profit, and they provide all the "scholarships," (an utterly Orwellian term that almost makes me throw-up in my mouth to use,) any disclosure the Legislator does make just say "ALEC." NOT the corporation who's really buying them. And what's more? Unlike with lobby groups (HOW the HELL is this not a lobby group?! WTF?!) Corporations actually get a TAX WRITE-OFF for their donations to ALEC!
So how does this make u s"Nazi's?" Am I just being melodramatic? I don't think so. Not anymore.
Do you know where the new, controversial Arizona immigration law came from? Well, it came out of an ALEC conference. And who else was in attendance at that conference? Why, the largest private prison company in the country: the Corrections Corporation of America. So follow me for a second here...
In case you were wondering, YES, they are a for-profit company. They're traded on the NYSE. You can look it up. We actually have for-profit incarceration in this country! Maye I'm just a little slow, but I didn't know that. Of course, it's sold as a cost-cutting measure for states - just like everything else we should never even CONSIDER privatizing. And sure enough: it's cheaper. Problem is? If the prisons aren't filled to at least 90-95% capacity, they don't make a profit.
So.... What to do... What to do?
Well... what they DID do was to craft a bill/ law specifically designed to get MORE PEOPLE thrown in prison! That's the Arizona Immigration law, requiring police to arrest ANYONE who can't PROVE they're not in this country legally, ON THE SPOT. And, putting aside the whole "innocent auntil proven guilty" implications, of course anyone with two brain cells to bounce together (which excluded most Conservatives apparently) realizes that this is a law aimed primarily at arresting Mexicans.
Now... normally a law like this might meet with some public backlash, so what to do... what to do... Well... The politicians could take to the airwaves, making up all kinds of nonsense and slander to turn public sentiment against Illegalls, yes, but also against Mexicans as well as Immigrants in general. (Hey: That fits right in with thier anti-Muslim agenda anyway, right?)
So... You've got politicans using the media to vilify an already small and unpopular minority group, with few rights, and no means to recourse, spreading all kinds of false information about them and the affect they have on our society - much of it 180 derees divorced from reality - all to drum up support for a bill designed to do nothing else but to get as many members of this very minority group carted off to prison as possible.
Um... How is that NOT Nazi, exactly? The only separating this from the gas chambers? Is the GAS!
And you know what? Putting aside that we're not actually KILLING them - fair enough - from a certain POV, we're actually WORSE than the Nazi's. Yeah, seriously. Stay with me now... You see... Hitler, in his own perverse way, actually believed that what he was doing was right. As despicable, and unimaginably inhuman as it was? His "final solution" was being done for purely idealistic reasons: to "save" Germany. Of course... his ideals were utterly monstrous. But why are WE doing the same thing? Sure, the politicians would have you believe that it's all to "save" America. (Sound familiar?) And in that way it's every bit as misguided as Hitler's persecution of the Jews was. But the fact is? That's all bullshit. I almost wish they were being that twistedly idealistic about it. The REAL reason we're vilifying and incarcerating Mexicans?
Is so that a for-profit corporation can make more money.
That's it.
And that's beyond fascist... that NAZI territory, plain and simple. I've taken some time to try and view this from any other perspective and I just can't see one. We're fucking Nazi's. Congratulations America, you now incarcerate minorities for no greater, misguided "ideal" than INCREASED CORPORATE PROFITS.
And you know what? Goebbels would be utterly HUMBLED by what the Right has managed to do to OUR media. HE had to at least make an EFFORT! OUR Right-Wing scumbags? Have Fox News cheerleading for them, propagandizing for them, as a matter course, no longer even bothering to keep up the PRETENSE of doing otherwise... and MAKING A PROFIT DOING IT!!! And the rest of the media follows suit for fear of being branded as "Liberal biased!" They've turned the media against their opposition, either vehemently or passively (which is far more effective anyway) and they didn't have to spend a single Penny of government money to do it! Goebbels's could certainly have learn a thing or two from Murdoch, Ailes and company. He had to make an effort. The Right in this country? Has made it the natural default perspective!
Anyway, I'm done.
For awhile, actually.
Seriously.
I'm going to take a little break. I have to. You can't wake up to the realization that your country incarcerates people for profit, and that politicians use the media to market the policty, FALSELY vilifying the people in question, and yet only one, single arm of this so-called "liberal media" (NPR) is even talking about it...and think that anything you can do or say is going to accomplish ANYTHING. This story just... crushed me. It swept away my last hope that this country even has a soul left to save.
George Carlin once said that fascism would not come to America in Brown-Shirts and Jack-Boots, but rather wearing Nike's. Well... it's not about Nike, but the point was positively and prfoundly prophetic. And it will simply not serve my mental health to keep railing against such utter hopelessness. I need a little time to recharge my batteries. Find a different direction to take this in. So... we'll see how it and where it goes.
Oh, ad uh... BTW...
There's an election tomorrow. So, vote. I guess. It's supposed to be important... or something.
And just like Glenn Beck, I'm not going to tell you who to vote for. Honestly, I don't really think it matters anymore anyway. But UNLIKE Glenn Beck, I'm going to give you this advice: WHATEVER you do, don't vote for
As three wise men once said...
"All we have to fear, is fear itself!" ~Franklin Roosevelt
"Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering." ~Yoda
and, perhaps the most important lesson for these spineless, useless Democrats to learn:
"Given a choice between a Republican and a Democrat who acts like a Republican, they'll choose the Republican every time" ~Harry Truman
...
WHY, with 20th Century icons like Wilson, Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy and Johnson to draw inspiration from, do they decide instead to take their lead from the likes of BILL CLINTON?
WHY?!
I had to take a break for a few days. I heard a story on NPR Frito be day morning that was profoundly disturbing.
WHY?!

NPR Fallout
okie, your email is going to have to wait...
Metal Matt left this link in the Juan / Queen post's comments section. It's a petition urging Congress not to cave to the Right and their hissy fit over Juan Williams ouster.
http://www.credoaction.com/campaign/stand_up_for_npr/?rc=homepage
We all know the Democrats are as useless as they are spineless, but just as the site says: we cannot let them do to a critical resource like NPR what they did to Acorn, Shirley Sherrod and Van Jones.
This insanity must stop. Hit the link. Sign the petition. Pass it on. And, even more importantly:
CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN'S OFFICE and CALL YOUR SENATOR'S OFFICE.
We cannot allow objective reporting to be hijacked by partisan politics.
Maybe it was Muslims that attacked us on 9/11. But that's going on ten years ago. The biggest threat to our freedom RIGHT NOW are these Right-Wing Fascists like Sarah Palin and all the others. You know how they always cry about the first amendment when WE, PRIVATE CITIZENS want to organize a boycott of Fox's, or of Glenn Beck's sponsors? That ain't the first amendment! We're not the Government! But what they want to do, right now? Is to USE the power to of the Government to punish NPR! That is a far greater violation of the spirit of the first amendment. Particularly when it comes down to a non-profit, public resource being bullied over partisan squabbles. NPR was within theirr rights. The Right is exceeding theirs.
DO. NOT. LET. THEM. DO. THIS. WITHOUT. A. FIGHT!

Juan Live the Queen!
Juan Williams IS a bigot.
Here's what he said on Fox, that (finally) got him fired from NPR:
Now... I'm not a big...... fan of saying that if you start a paragraph out that way, then that means you probably ARE. You can absolutely start a paragraph out that way, and NOT be a bigot. But if you do start out a paragraph out that way, you probably shouldn't spend the REST of that paragraph proving yourself wrong.
Allow me to translate what he said from Conservative Black Man to ENGLISH:
That would carry a little more weight if.... HE WASN'T BLACK! By that logic, I can't be a bigot, simply because I don't hate WHITE PEOPLE! And to think... this same crowd actually called Sonya Sotomayor a racist for not hating Latinas!
Oh and uh... Note to Juan: The actual terrorists don't come riding in on camels, waving scimitars and smoking hookah's while they stroke their long beards with fingers covered in bejeweled rings. They look like US. They BLEND IN! That's how they got past security in first place: Nothing unusual about them! That guy you're talking about? Even the TSA let him go, because they know that no terrorist would be stupid enough to get on a plane wearing something "identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims."
He's not only a bigot, but he's incredibly stupid to boot. It's about time NPR dropped this clown.
Speaking of NPR... (shift gears)
Great story today detailing how the Conservatives over in England are about to tank their entire economy.
(No that's not how they said it! But that's pretty much the inevitable result, you wait and see!)
My favorite part (not included in the link) was the idea that after they shed something like 500,000 public sector jobs, they expect the private sector to pick up the slack.
Yep, the Conservatives over there are pretty much as stupid as they are here, folks.
Why he hell would any company hire ANYONE when there are soon to be about half a million more people who are going to be NOT BUYING ANYTHING?! Demand is about to TANK. Who the heck do they think will be hiring?!
Morons.
Speaking of which...
HRM Queen Elizabeth II has decided that since the economy is so weak, that she shouldn't have her elaborate Christmas Parties and Holiday Balls this year. You know... It just wouldn't be right to have all that elaborate celebrating and spending all that money when so many people are struggling.
(You, uh... see where I'm going with this, right?)
I just wonder how thankful the caterers, tailors, limo drivers, dressmakers, porters, cabbies, not to mention all the restaurants and other London attractions will be , knowling that all that money they the usually make of those kinds of fancy occasions will be denied them this year, on top of an already tough economy.
You know... because the economy's bad, it just wouldn't be right, to...
I don't know...
HELP OUT, I guess.
THANKS A LOT, YOUR ROYAL CHEAPSKATE!
They suck all over the world, folks.
(okie: I got one more and I'll answer your email, K?)

"I mean, look, Bill, I'm not a bigot. You know the kind of books I've written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous." ~Juan Williams, on the O'Rielly Factor

I'm not a bigot. I'm just going to use derogatory stereotypes to explain why I don't like certain people!Doesn't that make a lot more sense? And you gotta love that bit about not being a bigot because he's written books about the civil rights era. Translation:
I'm not a biggot. I love black people!

This was very distrubing....
Driving into work this morning, I head this story on NPR. I found it very disturbing; a sign of just how far this country has devolved. I'm not sure if I should hope Mister Obama is aware of what's going on or not. It's a sad state of affairs to be sure.
First of all... Why the fuck are BP employees calling the shots here?! Why are they standing side by side with our coast guard and police force? Are you fucking kidding me?! This is NOT what's meant by "civilian control of the military!" This has been going for some time now, and it grows ever more disturbing as time goes on. Welcome to 1984, folks. If you ever wanted to see the freedom of the press utterly destroyed, well HERE YOU GO. It’s just like George Carlin once predicted: When fascism finally comes to this country, it won’t be wearing jack-boots, it will be wearing Nike’s.
A few points, that highlight the absolute absurdity of this, from the transcript:
Is our FBI really this stupid, or are they just blatantly insulting our intelligence? If "eco-terrorism" was involved AT ALL, it would have been at the BEGINNING, when the rig was still WORKING. Now, it was already shown that the initial fire was entirely the result of BP’s own negligence. That’s been clearly established. And that’s was the only possible oppotunity for “eco-terrorism.” Destroy the RIG. (Something that is completely without precedent, I might add!) Not showing up three months later and sabotaging the CLEANUP. That doesn’t make any damned sense at all!
This situation is now nothing more than corporatism using out irrational fear of terrorism to PREVENT the real story from being told here. (Behold your LIBERAL MEDIA!) And the only really terrifying thing going on here, is just how much this FOREIGN (not even US-based!) corporate entity can manipulate our gov’t into doing its bidding, even getting them to violate the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
No only should BP’s heads roll over this (and as far as I’m concerned, that BP Corporate Whore Scott Dean should be boiled in crude-oil as an example to other professioanl liars) but there needs to be some serious investigations into the gov’t actions here; Not in dealing with the spill itself, as the right have hypocritically called for, I’ll stand by my earlier judgment that President Obama is doing exactly what he should be in terms of the cleanup, (althought how would I know otherwise, seeing as how the press has been largely shut out?!) but of the way the Coast Guard, FBI and Police have denied press access, intimidated the press, rifled though their private property without warrant or propbable cause and have conspired with BP to keep the Public minimally informed at best, and misinformed at worst. Heads should roll over that.
Hey right-wingers? THIS is what “big government” or "big borther" REALLY looks like: Corporate interests being protected over public ones.

A few points, that highlight the absolute absurdity of this, from the transcript:
"You are not allowed, as a police officer, to rummage through the notebooks and photographs — not published — of newspapers," Engelberg said. "That's not how we do it in this country."Well said, Mister Engelberg. Have you contacted the ACLU yet?
"We have more than 40,000 people working on this response," [BP spokesman Scott Dean] said. "We're working around the clock to make this situation right. And we very much want that story to be told."Yeah – they sure do: THEIR VERSION of the story. How else does he explain away the fact that the press has been HINDERED by HIS OWN company from telling the story?! This man is not only a whore, he’s a cheap whore, and doesn’t even try to hide the fact.
The flap in Texas City over the police stop of the Pro Publica photographer involves practices initiated in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. FBI Special Agent Shauna Dunlap, of the agency's Houston field office, said that such stops have become common around sensitive sites like refineries and nuclear power plants.Riiight… I’m sure an already demolished oil well, 5000 feet below sea level, is a really high level target on Al-Quaeda’s hit list.
"People don't think about it, but there are people out there who want to do us harm, and it's our obligation to protect our territory and these critical infrastructures that are targets," Dunlap said
...adding that the oil company had also been threatened by what she said were environmental terrorists.Oh, I get it. It’s environmental terrorism, they're worried about. Because, yeah, again, they’d accomplish SO MUCH by screwing up the cleanup effort, after the rig had burned down, sunk, and spilled X-Million barrels of oil into the gulf. Yeah, that’s when they "eco-terrorists" would SPRING INTO ACTION.
"There is a heightened security around those facilities, especially with BP," Dunlap said.
Something about POLLING DATA...
I saw a really stupid item from Fox News the other day on MMFA. They were trumpeting the results of a POLL that, they claimed showed that they were more balanced that the other media outlets. As is par for the course with Fox, there are several problems with both the claim and interpretation.
1) The poll was old and it's data contradicted by a more recent poll's data.
2) It polled the political affiliation of the VIEWERSHIP, not the content of their broadcast: It showed that they have a ~50/50 split of Democratic vs. Republicans viewers, while other networks have almost entirely Democratic audiences.
(So... Going by that kind of logic, Eminem would have been BLACK.)
The thing is... I don't think either poll says anything particularly profound about Fox at all. Consider this: The percentage of Democrats to Republicans in this country in somewhere between 50/50 and 60/40, slightly favoring the Democrats. So what this polling data tells ME is that Republicans pretty much refuse to watch anything except Fox, whilst Democrats prefer to get their news and opinion from a variety of sources. That says for more about Republicans that it does about Fox, and it doesn't say much for 'em at that. (No tolerance for Cognitive Dissonance, you see.)
Now... Goofy Polling Data is far from just a problem at Fox. A few weeks (months?) back, I heard a story on NPR. They were reporting on a Poll that saying (something like) 80% of Americans were "angry" with "how things were in Washington." (The numbers may not be right, and I'm paraphrasing the poll, but I hope you get the idea.) Now, they went to cite the conventional wisdom that an angry populace is a bad thing for the incumbent party. Well... that's certainly possible, but do you know what they DIDN'T report? (Or apparently ask as a follow-up question?) WHY are people angry? WHAT or WHO are they ANGRY AT? It certainly could be that everyone pissed at the Democrats and their "socialist agenda." (Which is nonsense, but you wan't hear that on Fox!) It's also just as likely that people were pissed at Republicans for obstructing EVERYTHING and refusing to work with a party that is trying to work with them to solve this country's problems. Are they angry at the direction we're heading, or the fact that we're not going there fast enough?!
And THAT'S the problem with the way polls are conducted and reported. They always leave me with an OBVIOUS and EASY follow-up question (or two) that was either not asked or not reported. And what good is applying conventional wisdom in this way? If you're just going to make the results conform to conventional wisdom, WHY BOTHER DOING A POLL IN THE FIRST PLACE?!
